There were 216 pediatric deaths from the flu in the nation during the 2024 to 2025 season, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.

The New York State Department of Health said the number is the highest it’s been in the last 15 years. 25 of those deaths are from New York State, which is the highest recorded number the state has seen. Only one child was vaccinated.

New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said some of the children who died were too young to receive the vaccine. Children need to be at least 6-months-old to receive a flu vaccination.

Dr. McDonald said people who are around young children should keep up with their vaccinations so they do not infect them.

“Misinformation around vaccines has in recent years contributed to a rise in vaccine hesitancy and declining vaccination rates,” Dr. McDonald said. “Vaccines are the best protection we have, and do save lives, including the lives of very young children who are too young to receive certain vaccines.”

Vaccinations are usually available in September, McDonald noted.
