LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – Doctors Hospital is helping the community learn about stroke during National Stroke Awareness Month.

Dr. Osama Jamil, the stroke center medical director, says that stroke can happen to anyone, and it’s important to act fast.

“Stroke is a leading cause of disability in the U.S. and the world,” Jamil said. “Symptoms can include sudden loss of balance, changes in vision, a drooping face, arm or leg weakness, and trouble speaking.”

Jamil stressed the importance of going to the hospital right away if symptoms appear. “The sooner you get to the hospital, the sooner you may be eligible for treatments that can lower the risk of permanent damage.”

Dr. Jamil also shared an easy way to remember stroke signs: BEFAST.

  • B – Balance problems
  • E – Eyesight changes
  • F – Face drooping
  • A – Arm or leg weakness
  • S – Speech trouble
  • T – Time to call 911

Doctors Hospital is hosting a free health fair this Thursday, May 15, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the main lobby. They will offer checks for blood sugar, cholesterol, height, and weight. Fasting is needed for some tests. Dr. Jamil will also be there to answer questions.
