CINCINNATI (WKRC)— As summer travel plans take shape, health officials are warning that a new COVID-19 variant, NB.1.8.1, is spreading rapidly in the United States.

The variant, linked to a significant outbreak surge in China, has been detected through airport testing conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in California, Washington, Virginia, and New York. It has also appeared in state testing in Ohio and Rhode Island.

Dr. Steve Feagins, Hamilton County Public Health Medical Director, emphasized the importance of surveillance in tracking the variant’s spread.

“It highlights the importance of surveillance,” said Dr. Feagins.

While the variant does not appear to be more severe or better at evading the immune system compared to other strains, Dr. Feagins noted it may have improved transmission capabilities.

“More transmissions just means more infections,” said Dr. Feagins.

The variant has been associated with high outbreak numbers in countries such as China and Hong Kong, as well as increased emergency room visits, severe cases, and deaths in Taiwan. Despite this, the current COVID-19 vaccine remains the best protection for those at high risk of complications.

Dr. Feagins advised travelers to consider using masks and to be cautious about attending large gatherings if they develop symptoms.

“It’s always a good idea if you need to use a barrier such as a mask, and if you are about to go to a big ole family gathering and you come down with symptoms you might want to rethink that,” said Dr. Feagins.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation, noting that if cases continue to rise, it would align with patterns observed in previous COVID-19 waves.
