A small study claims that Covaxin offers protection delta (B.1.617.2) and beta (B.1.351) variants.

The study evaluated the neutralization potential in people vaccinated with Covaxin and found that there was a 3 and 2.7-fold reduction in neutralization titers against beta (B.1.351) and delta (B. 1.617.2), respectively. In comparison, the reduction in neutralization titers with sera from people recovered from COVID-19 was 3.3 and 4.6 times greater than the beta and delta variants, respectively. The results of the study were published on bioRxiv preprint server June 7. The preprints have not yet been peer reviewed.
“We observed a reduction in neutralization titer values in recipients of Covaxin against beta and delta variants, but the reduction is less than in people who were naturally infected. The vaccine therefore offers protection against both variants, ”explains Dr Pragya Yadav of the National Institute of Virology in Pune and first author of the prepublication. The study was carried out by researchers from NIV, ICMR and Bharat Biotech.
The study evaluated the neutralization potential of sera collected from 20 recovered cases of COVID-19 and 17 people vaccinated with two doses of Covaxin against beta and delta variants and compared it to the prototype variant D614G. “Many other studies examining the neutralizing potential of sera taken from people who have received different vaccines have also used only a small number of samples,” says Dr Yadav.
Researchers evaluated the neutralization potential of sera from recovered COVID-19 cases after 5 to 20 weeks of infection and 28 days after two doses in the case of Covaxin recipients. Seventeen of the recovered cases were infected with the D614G variant and three were infected with the B.1.617.1 line.
All of the COVID-19 vaccines currently in use, including Covaxin, have been shown to offer relatively weaker protection against the beta variant. In comparison, all vaccines offer relatively higher protection against the delta variant.
