According to the University of Copenhagen, artificial intelligence systems are now being used to increase the effectiveness of treatments for sleep disorders.

Sleep disturbances, including sleep disturbances, narcolepsy, and sleep apnea are just a few of the most common problems many people suffer from. They sometimes have an impact on their mental and physical health.

However, various forms of sleep disorders go undiagnosed, and sometimes treatments don’t work as effectively as researchers hope.

As a resolution, the Department of Informatics at the University of Copenhagen decided to collaborate with the Danish Center for Sleep Medicine located in the Danish Rigs Hospital. This collaboration aims to develop an artificial intelligence system algorithm that could improve the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders, and better understand the disorders.

Artificial Intelligence – What is its role?

According to Xpress medical, the researchers plan to create an artificial intelligence algorithm with exceptional precision.

Mathias Perslev of the Department of Computer Science, and the lead author of the current study, mentioned in the “Digital medicine“that they have already performed several tests. These tests have shown how the performance of the algorithm is comparable to that of some of the best doctors specializing in sleep disorders.

The current first step in examinations for sleep disorders usually involves admitting the patient to a licensed sleep clinic. The patient’s nighttime sleep will be monitored using a number of measuring instruments.

Next, a sleep disorders specialist will look at the seven to eight hours of data that the patient’s nighttime sleep will provide.

The specialist will then proceed to manually divide the patient’s sleep into 30-second intervals, categorized according to their specific sleep phases, such as paradoxical sleep, light sleep, deep sleep and others.

The process is a tedious task for humans. But for the artificial intelligence algorithm, it will only take a few seconds to complete the laborious task.

Poul Jennun, professor of neurophysiology and chief medical officer at the Danish Center for Sleep Medicine, recently said the project allows them to prove that measurements can be performed safely using machine learning. Through using Artificial Intelligence, the specialist can put in many hours of work, and more patients can be helped.

Full range of artificial intelligence help

Artificial intelligence algorithm will begin to work in multiple patient groups and sleep clinics.

The researchers behind the new development can ensure optimal functionality by collecting data from a variety of sources. The research study currently collected 20,000 nights of sleep in the United States and several European countries. The data in their possession is used to track the new AI algorithm.

Indeed, this kind of achievement is probably one of the best challenges the field of medical data analysis has ever overcome.

The researchers now hope that the new AI algorithm will be of great help to doctors and researchers around the world.
