ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will hold an emergency meeting next week to discuss a higher than usual number of cases of heart inflammation reported following COVID-19 vaccinations.
The CDC has identified 226 reports of a heart disease called myocarditis following injections in people under the age of 30. Normally, less than 100 cases would be expected for this age group.
The CDC said the illness seemed to occur more in men and more often after dose number two. This has also usually happened within four days of receiving a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.
The vast majority of patients have recovered and 15 are still in hospital.
A cardiologist in St. Louis says these cases are very rare and represent a tiny fraction of the 130 million Americans who have been vaccinated with the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine.
“So far, these cases are rare. They are self-limited, which means patients have been in the hospital, been sick, but have returned home perfectly fine with normal heart function, at least to this day. It is very difficult to establish a causal link between the vaccine and the development of myocarditis. We can only say they were related in time, ”said Dr. Kory Lavine of the Washington University cardiologist at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
Dr Lavine emphasizes that the benefits of getting the vaccine outweigh the risks.
