New Delhi: Covid-19 has not only kept humans on the edge, but it has also given way to new diseases in the form of black, yellow and white fungal infections. In Indore of Madhya Pradesh, a new type of fungus has been detected which is now called the green fungus.

A 34-year-old man who had recently recovered from Covid-19 was diagnosed with a green fungus infection in Indore and was transferred to Mumbai by air ambulance for treatment. The emergence of green fungus infection in a Covid survivor who completed 90 days of treatment has raised concerns in the scientific community.

Suspecting that he had contracted the dreaded black fungus infection (mucormycosis), his lungs were examined at Aurobindo Hospital and discovered that a green colored fungus had been found in the patient’s lungs, which was not cannot be called Mucor, so it cannot be called Mucormycosis, but due to its green color, it is called green fungus.

What is the green mushroom?

The new infection detected as green fungus is also known as aspergillosis. It is an infection caused by a common mold (a type of fungus) that lives inside and out. Even though people breathe in Aspergillus spores every day without getting sick, it can also cause nosebleeds and high fever.

According to Dr Ravis Dosi, head of the lung disease department at the Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences (SAIMS) in Indore, the infection often causes severe weight loss and weakness. The infection required more research to deal with the emergence of this fungus.

Aspergillosis joins the list of new color-coded fungal diseases that have emerged in Covid-19 patients and survivors. Although there are several varieties of fungi, Aspergillus fumigatus is the most common cause of human Aspergillus infections. Cases of black fungus (mucormycosis), white fungus (candida) and yellow fungus (aspergillosis) peaked across the country during the second wave of infection. Although fungal infections have been named for different colors, they are often caused by the same species of fungi.

What are the different types of fungal infections?

AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria recently said: “There are different types of fungal infections such as candida, aspergillosis, cryptococcus, histoplasmosis and coccidioidomycosis. Mucormycosis, candida, and aspergillosis are most commonly seen in people with low immunity.

What can cause a green fungal infection?

Aspergillosis infection can occur through the simple breathing of microscopic spores of the aspergillus fungus. Under normal conditions, the body’s immune system suppresses the growth of all spores in the body, but in some cases the body fails to suppress the growth of spores, especially those with weaker immune systems. Those who have recovered or have lung disease are at greater risk of developing aspergillosis.

Fungal infections in Covid-19 patients are due to several reasons, including lung damage, excessive steroid use, a weakened immune system, and a lack of infection control in overworked hospitals.

It should be noted that fungal diseases are not transmissible and do not spread from human to human or between humans and animals.

What are the common symptoms?

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, invasive aspergillosis infections can present the following symptoms in patients:

  • Fever
  • Chest pain
  • Cough
  • Cough blood
  • Shortness of breath

Patients who have suffered from a lung disease, such as Covid-19, or have currently weakened immune systems, are advised to try and protect themselves from dust, soil, and other small particles entering their rooms. lungs and use N95 respirator masks.

How to prevent fungal infections

  • Such fungal infections can be prevented by maintaining good hygiene, oral and physical cleanliness.
  • Do not venture into areas with a lot of dust and contaminated water stored, and always wear an N95 respirator for prevention in case you cannot avoid these areas.
