Massachusetts reported significantly fewer coronavirus cases in the week ending Sunday, adding 520 new cases. This is a drop of 34.3% from the previous week’s tally of 792 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
The state ranked 48th in the United States where the coronavirus was spreading the fastest per person, according to a USA TODAY network analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University.
In the past week, coronavirus cases in the United States were down 19.6% from the previous week, with 79,884 cases reported. With 2.07% of the nation’s population, Massachusetts recorded 0.65% of the nation’s cases last week.
Across the country, eight states had more cases in the past week than the week before.
Across Massachusetts, cases declined in 10 counties, with the best declines in Worcester, Suffolk and Bristol counties.
Worcester County has reported 59 cases and four deaths in the past week. A week earlier, it had reported 143 cases and four deaths. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 77,358 cases and 2,244 deaths.

Massachusetts ranked second among the states in terms of the proportion of people who received at least one injection, with 69.5% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 53.3%, according to a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data.
The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most widely used in the United States, require two doses given a few weeks apart.
In the week ending Sunday, the state said it administered an additional 196,636 doses of the vaccine, including 65,789 first doses. During the previous week, the state administered 177,027 doses of the vaccine, including 59,947 first doses.
In total, the state reported administering 8,656,159 total doses.
In the state, the worst weekly epidemics per person have been in Hampden, Essex and Bristol counties. Middlesex County, with 96 cases, added the most new cases overall; Essex County, with 73 cases; and Suffolk County, with 66.
In Massachusetts, 29 people were reported dead from COVID-19 during the week ending Sunday. During the previous week, 28 people had been declared dead.

A total of 709,395 people in the state have tested positive for the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic, and 17,968 people have died from the disease, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
In the United States, 33,541,887 people have tested positive and 601,824 people have died.
Note: For Massachusetts, Johns Hopkins University reports data from a combined health service for Dukes and Nantucket counties. These two counties may appear without any cases, which will distort the ranking of counties.
