There were no new cases of COVID-19 in Leeds, Grenville and Lanark on Wednesday, leaving the region with three people with the virus.

A resident of Western Leeds recovered from the virus, leaving COVID from the health unit concentrated in Western Lanark, where the three people lived.

That meant all of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville as well as Eastern Lanark were not reporting any COVID-19 on Wednesday.

Health unit reports are based on data as of 4 p.m. the day before.

In the past three weeks, the health unit has reported eight or fewer active cases of the virus per day, a positive record due in part to the successful local rollout of the vaccine.

At the end of last week, the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit reported that 83.2% of adults had received at least one dose of the vaccine.

The local health unit has one of the best first-dose vaccine records in Ontario, mainly because its older demographics mean a higher percentage of residents were vaccinated earlier due to the age-based rollout. .

At the start of the week, the local first-dose record of 82.3% compared favorably to 76% province-wide.

In Leeds, Grenville and Lanark, 19.6 percent of adults are fully vaccinated with two injections, which is slightly lower than the provincial average of over 20 percent. For 12 to 17 year olds, coverage for the first dose was 56%.

Raw figures show that 125,594 local residents have received their first vaccine while another 28,295 are fully immunized with two vaccines.

The local health unit also vaccinated another 22,492 people from outside Leeds, Grenville and Lanark.

After a slow start earlier in the week, the health unit has more second injection appointments available for residents who received their first vaccine before May 10.

People who have had AstraZeneca as their first jab are eligible for a second injection after 12 weeks.

The health unit is asking people who receive a second jab earlier to cancel their initial appointment for a jab later. They can do this online or at the vaccination clinic when they show up for their previous vaccination.

Ontario reported its third consecutive day of fewer than 300 new cases with 255 on Wednesday. There were 11 new deaths.

In eastern Ontario, Ottawa continued to do well this week, reporting 15 new cases on Wednesday for a total of 161 active COVID cases.

Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Public Health reported 10 active cases on Wednesday, the same as the day before.

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit has reported 12 active cases, including three in South Dundas and one in North Dundas.
