The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has updated the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine fact sheets to warn people about the risk of heart inflammation.
According to Warning published on Friday, reports of adverse events after vaccination – especially after the second dose – imply an increased risk of myocarditis and pericarditis.
The FDA said the updated warning comes after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) advisory committee on immunization practices, including a detailed review of the information and discussions.

Rare heart inflammation not surprisingly
It was not surprising to see such a warning on the sheets. Forbes said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) had established a “likely association” between vaccinations and rare cases of myocarditis and pericarditis in young people two days earlier.
Another report from Forbes claimed that there had been less than 300 verified cases of myocarditis or pericarditis among approximately 150 million fully vaccinated people in the United States. Even if the figure of one in 300,000 is to be believed in the photo accompanying the following tweet, it is still a better chance than being killed by a cow:

Fortunately, pediatric cardiologist Dr Matthew Oster said ABC7 that patients were recovering quickly from the inflammation of the heart. The vaccines are based on research into the use of mRNA technology in both vaccines.
Either way, the FDA advises individuals that if they develop any symptoms, including shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations, rapid pounding, or heartbeat, they should seek emergency medical attention.

What is pericarditis, myocarditis?
Health officials in many countries have looked at incidents of myocarditis and pericarditis, which are more common in young men after receiving a Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine dpse.
Pericarditis is a condition characterized by swelling and irritation of the thin sac-like tissue surrounding your heart.
Myocarditis, on the other hand, is the swelling of the heart muscle. It has an impact on the electrical system of your heart as well as on its muscles.
Both of these factors can lead to a decrease in the heart’s ability to pump blood, as well as arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats).
Both are typical side effects of drug use, and vaccinations are to blame for both. Pfizer and Moderna were contacted for comment by Reuters, but neither company has responded yet.
There is nothing to fear from the warning, expert says
Only Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna Covid-19 mRNA vaccines are now subject to FDA warnings. This does not mean that these risks are exclusive to mRNA vaccines.
Timothy Wong, MD, MS, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and director of the Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Center at UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute, said Forbes there will be severe chest pain for a few days before the symptoms subside.
According to Wong, even if you are a teenager, none of this should deter you from taking the COVID-19 vaccine.
