Several Jackson County Health Department employees have been working daily since March of last year. Since the start of the pandemic, the department’s priority has been to help people in the community feel safe. Today, the ministry is recognized for its efforts.
At the Jackson County Commissioners’ meeting on Wednesday, the Jackson County Health Department received an award for its efforts during the pandemic.
Jackson County Clerk Cheryl Bright presented the award and mainly spoke about how the health department’s role in street voting enabled 35 people who were in quarantine to vote in November.
Health service workers donned PPE and served curbside ballots on election day. With N-95 masks and gloves, Haskins handed voters ballots and returned them to the Jackson County courthouse after they were filled.

Bright said she was impressed with how Jackson County Health Department workers went “above and beyond” what was asked of them. Haskins said they were just doing their part.
“We didn’t want them to miss their chance to vote,” Haskins said. “We were fortunate to be able to be a part of this day.”
Jackson County Department of Health Provides Update on COVID-19
Haskins presented several updates after receiving the award for outstanding service. Here are the numbers:
- 11,422 doses of vaccines were administered in the county from January 1 to June 7
- There were 42 vaccination clinics from January 1 to June 7
- The department provided more than 44 test sites from April to December in 2020
- Three of the health service employees worked an average of 415 overtime hours per month from March 2020 to June 2021
“No wonder we are so tired,” Haskins said.
Despite the growing number of people being vaccinated, Haskins said his department expects an increase in COVID-19 cases in the fall with schools reopening and people returning from vacation. She said the Delta variant was “on its way” to West Virginia.
