The description
The Board of Health is responsible for promoting public health in Freetown. It investigates health and environmental issues and manages and coordinates health programs and services within the city. The main concerns include the prevention and control of communicable diseases and the observance of sanitary requirements governing catering establishments, water supply, sewage disposal, housing and public swimming pools.
The Department also licenses and inspects restaurants, markets, bakeries, clubs, children’s recreation camps, family-type campgrounds, public and semi-public swimming pools. We collect water samples for bacterial analysis from city beaches. We inspect the installation of sewage disposal systems, obtain a license for sewage disposal system installers and assist with percolation tests and soil assessments. Apart from that, we respond to complaints about nuisance and any of the licensed and inspected establishments.
The Board of Health is empowered by the regulations of the city of Freetown and the general laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to consider and take direct action on any matter of public health.
We have provided forms and a list of fees to save you time. Please call us if you have any further questions.
The Board of Health is made up of three members who also act as the Selection Board. Each member of the Board is elected for a three-year term. The board of health officer is appointed by the board of health to act as an officer in the day-to-day operations of the office.
