People affected by Covid need to take care of their kidney health: experts

As the second wave of Covid leaves India devastated in the midst of the third wave of warning, those who have been severely affected by the deadly respiratory disease must also monitor their kidney health, top health experts advised on Friday. health. A latest AIIMS study has confirmed that apart from the lungs and liver, the kidneys are most affected in patients with severe Covid-19. According to Dr Amit K Devra, senior kidney transplant surgeon at Jaypee Hospital in Noida, low oxygen levels in the blood due to pneumonia can produce NTDs (tubule damage) in the kidneys.

“In severe cases, due to the cytokine storm, there is a severe immune response leading to intense inflammation of several organs, including the kidneys, causing damage to healthy kidneys,” Devra told IANS .

The full impact of COVID-19 on the kidneys is not yet clear.

However, C John Sperati, a kidney health expert at Johns Hopkins Medicine, revealed how the new coronavirus could affect kidney function as the disease develops and then as a person recovers.

The virus itself infects kidney cells. Kidney cells have receptors that allow the new coronavirus to attach to, invade, and reproduce, potentially damaging these tissues.

“Similar receptors are found on cells in the lungs and heart, where the novel coronavirus has been shown to cause injury,” said Sperati, also director of the nephrology training program, in a latest update posted on the Johns Hopkins website.

Another possibility is that kidney problems in coronavirus patients are due to abnormally low levels of oxygen in the blood, a result of pneumonia commonly seen in severe cases of the disease, he added.

The kidneys are like filters that remove toxins, excess water, and wastes from the body.

“Covid-19 can cause tiny clots to form in the bloodstream, which can block the kidney’s smallest blood vessels and affect how it works,” according to Sperati.

Some people with severe cases of Covid-19 show signs of kidney damage, even those who did not have underlying kidney problems before they were infected with the coronavirus.

Initial reports indicate that up to 30% of patients hospitalized with Covid-19 in China and New York City have developed moderate or severe kidney damage.

According to Dr Anuja Porwal, Additional Director, Nephrology, at Fortis Hospital, most of the time the damage is reversible and sometimes it is partially reversible and sometimes it is not reversible.

“If a person has underlying comorbidities like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney stones, etc., they are more likely to have kidney problems.

In addition, sometimes the drugs given for the treatment of Covid can also impact the kidneys, ”Porwal told IANS.

If a patient has had kidney damage during a Covid infection, he / she should definitely have a kidney function test and regular follow-up with a nephrologist for at least three months, experts have advised.
