No new deaths from COVID, but 169 more cases as Mass. reports nearly 10,000 additional vaccinations

Massachusetts health officials have reported 169 new cases of COVID-19[female[feminine and zero new deaths as vaccinations continue.

There were 9,952 additional vaccinations reported on Friday, down slightly from Thursday. There are now 4.3 million people vaccinated, representing 61% of the state’s population, while 63% have at least one dose.

So far during the pandemic, Massachusetts has seen at least 664,575 residents test positive for the virus and 17,646 have died.

Friday’s new cases are based on 33,087 new molecular tests. The seven-day average of positive tests stands at 0.50%, slightly more than the low of 0.29% reached last week.

Currently, 87 people are hospitalized with the virus, against 89 on Thursday. There are 25 patients in intensive care and 11 who are intubated.

Earlier on Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidelines for the reopening of K-12 schools, which recommended that anyone not fully immunized to wear masks in school buildings. Children under 12 cannot yet be vaccinated.

In Massachusetts, mask restrictions are expected to be lifted for the 2021-2022 academic year.

“DESE will carefully review the new CDC guidelines released today and consult with local medical experts to determine if any changes are needed to the current school reopening guidelines,” said Colleen Quinn, spokesperson for the executive office of education. .
