60% of Toronto adults now fully vaccinated; Canada to reach 55 million doses by end of week

Toronto has reached another vaccine milestone with 60 percent of adults now fully immunized.

Mayor John Tory is encouraging all eligible residents to get vaccinated, saying the city still has work to do to ensure vaccines are accessible to everyone.

As part of the Toronto team Home Stretch Vaccine surge, the city has launched more than 20 targeted vaccination micro-clinics in six priority neighborhoods in the northwest of the city.

Tory visited one of the Kingsview Junior School clinics in Etobicoke on Sunday.

“The progress we’ve made in Toronto with almost 60 percent of adults now fully vaccinated is incredible, but we still have work to do,” Tory said. “It was very encouraging to see residents lining up to receive their first and second doses of the vaccine. “

The northwest part of the city has one of the lowest overall vaccination rates for the first and second dose, at 59% and 36% respectively.

The initiative started on Saturday with more than a dozen clinics taking place over the weekend.

Toronto marked another milestone last week by surpassing one million doses of vaccine given at city-run immunization clinics.

The Region of Peel reached its own important vaccination milestone over the weekend.

Public health officials say more than half of the region’s adult residents are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

As of Friday, Peel Region had administered more than 1.8 million doses of the vaccine.

Federal vaccine shipments

Canada expects vaccine shipments to continue this week as the country approaches the percentage of people in the United States fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The federal government expects an additional 1.4 million doses of Pfizer-BioNTech’s shot to arrive within the next seven days.

He also plans to distribute the 1.5 million doses of Moderna that arrived last Friday.

By the end of the week, Canadian authorities expect to have received a total of more than 55 million doses, including the latest shipments, although those figures may change.

The federal government has pledged it will hit 68 million shots by the end of July and says it is still on track to meet that target.

To date, approximately 42.7% of eligible Canadian residents have received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, providing them with complete protection against the virus.
