INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Food and Drug Administration has issued a Warning on a possible link between the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and a disease called Guillain-Barré syndrome, also known as GBS.
Infection is a neurological disorder that destroys the nerves in the body. It causes weakness in the legs, arms and torso and can eventually lead to paralysis. According to Centers for Disaster Control and Prevention, GBS is usually transient and people usually recover within a few weeks. However, the symptoms can last for years.
For some, permanent damage remains. But why could a vaccine designed to protect against one virus activate a different viral infection?
“Most vaccines don’t really work for the first two weeks,” IU Health neurologist Dr Cynthia Bodkin told News 8. “Your body hasn’t had time to produce the antibodies and the immune response. . Your body then produces an immune response and becomes confused and it thinks your nerves are similar to that viral vaccine – or whatever vaccine you get vaccinated for – then attacks your nerves. “
Johnson & Johnson has published a declaration on Monday July 12 by stating: “The safety and well-being of the people who use our products is our number one priority. Rare cases of neurological disorders have been reported after vaccination. While the risk of this happening is very low, Johnson & Johnson has updated their COVID-19 vaccine fact sheet to include this information. “
According to Ministry of Health and Social Services, symptoms of GBS begin to appear six weeks after vaccination. The CDC says 100 people have developed the disease so far.
