Mr Abderrahmane Fadil ended up in intensive care for nine days on oxygen after believing his immune system would be “good enough” and that he did not need to be vaccinated against the deadly pathogen. The 60-year-old added, “My wife had the vaccine. I did not do it. I was reluctant. I was giving myself time, I thought that in my life I had lived with viruses, bacteria, and I thought my immune system was good enough.
“And I had had symptoms of Covid when the pandemic started and I thought maybe I had it.
“I thought my immune system would recognize the virus and I would have defenses.
“It was the biggest mistake of my life, it almost cost me my life.
“I have made many stupid decisions in my life, but this was the most dangerous and the most serious.

“I would like to be able to go see every person who refuses to be vaccinated and say to them, ‘listen, this is a matter of life or death, do you want to live or die? “If you want to live, then go get vaccinated.”
Dr John Wright, who works at the Royal Bradford Infirmary, where Mr Fadil was treated, said about half of the patients in his wards who need specialist treatment for the coronavirus do not have been vaccinated.

The 54-year-old, who was being treated at the Royal Bradford Infirmary, believed he could avoid the virus and did not need a vaccine.
Mr Bashir told the BBC: “I was offered the vaccine, but I was arrogant.
“I would go to the gym, bike, walk and run.
“Since I was strong and healthy, I didn’t think I needed it.
“It also meant that if it turned out that it wasn’t safe, I wouldn’t have taken any chances.
“But the truth was, I couldn’t avoid the virus.
“It got me anyway.
“I don’t know how or where.”
The 54-year-old added: “People fill hospitals with risk and that’s wrong.
“I feel bad.
“I feel so bad about it and I hope that speaking out will help others avoid it.”
The news comes as Professor John Edmunds of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine warned the spread of the coronavirus would increase after the lockdown was lifted on July 19.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4, he said: “My hunch is that we are looking at a high level of incidence for an extended period throughout the summer and probably much of the fall.
“We started to relax the restrictions before everyone was vaccinated.
“This will lead to infections in unvaccinated people – mainly younger people in this case. It is inevitable that this will happen.
