A group of mosquitoes collected at Harborcreek tested positive for West Nile virus, the Erie County Department of Health announced Wednesday.
The group of mosquitoes was collected on July 7, 2021. This is the first group of mosquitoes to test positive in Erie County in 2021.
Currently, no human cases have been reported in Erie County.
The health department says additional mosquito surveillance will be carried out in the area where the group of mosquitoes was collected.

You can reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home and neighborhood by eliminating standing water:
- Dispose of all waste that may contain water, such as cans, containers and especially used tires. Tires have become a favorite breeding ground for mosquitoes in the country.
- Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers and check for uncovered garbage piles.
- Clean out clogged gutters every year and check storm drains, leaky faucets and window wells.
- Empty the water accumulated in wheelbarrows, boats, trailers, toys and ceramic pots. If possible, turn them over when not in use.
- Do not allow water to stagnate in bird baths, ornamental pools, water gardens and swimming pools or their covers. Ornamental ponds can be aerated or filled with fish. Swimming pools should be cleaned and chlorinated when not in use.
- Products such as “mosquitoes dunks” can be obtained in garden centers.
- Make sure window and door screens are “insect proof”.
- Use the right kind of light outdoors: Incandescent lights attract mosquitoes, while fluorescent lights neither attract nor repel mosquitoes.
- Stay indoors at dawn, dusk, and early evening when mosquitoes are most active. If you must go out, wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants.
- Insect repellents containing DEET can be applied (sparingly) to exposed skin and will deter mosquitoes from biting. Spray a repellent on thin clothes, as mosquitoes can bite them. Be sure to follow all directions on the product labels.
- Mosquitoes are repelled by high winds, so electric fans can provide some relief at outdoor events.
