The Navy’s Submarine Base in Connecticut is reinstating more stringent COVID-19 protocols amid rising infection rates in the state.

New London Submarine Base on Wednesday raised what is called its force health protection requirement from Alpha to Bravo more stringent for the first time since June 10.

This means that the gathering sizes in the gymnasium and for events on the base may be limited. The base’s racquetball courts have been closed and its pool will be open by appointment only.

Mask requirements remain in effect at the base clinic, child and youth development centers and for base people who are not fully vaccinated.

“All of us – immune or not – must remember that the pandemic continues and that our bottom line for the Navy and SUBASE must always be: to ensure that we do not pose any undue risk to our sailors, our families and our people. our critical mission, ”said the captain. Todd Moore, the base commander, said in a statement.

Officials said the change results from examining the growing conditions of the COVID-19 virus. Infection rates and hospitalizations over the past six weeks have indicated that the virus has adapted and its range is increasing, base officials said.

The seven-day moving average of daily new cases in Connecticut has increased over the past two weeks, from 55.86 new cases per day on July 6 to 163.43 new cases per day on July 20.

“The base increase in HPCON Bravo should serve as a reminder to all that the pandemic remains significant, and even deadly, for those who are unvaccinated,” officials said in their statement.
