WASHINGTON (WVLA) – A week after a Texas man was confirmed to have monkey pox after traveling abroad, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is monitoring dozens of people who may have come into contact with him.

Since the initial diagnosis of monkey pox in Texas, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been monitoring “more than 200 people in 27 states and a few other countries.”

The patient flew to Atlanta, Georgia on July 9 from Lagos, Nigeria and then proceeded to Dallas. He was admitted to a Dallas hospital.

The individuals observed either know that they were around the patient with monkey pox or that they were on the same flights as humans.

None of those monitored are considered high risk and so far no additional cases have been found.

The CDC stresses that the risk to everyone is low.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, here are the signs and symptoms to look out for:

The disease begins with:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Back ache
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Chills
  • Exhaustion
  • Within 1 to 3 days (sometimes more) after the onset of fever, the patient develops a rash, often starting on the face and then spreading to other parts of the body.

If you have any questions on how not to get infected with the monkey pox virus, visit CDC prevention.

Currently, there is no safe treatment for anyone who has contracted monkey pox.

It has been more than 50 years since the first case of monkey pox was diagnosed, according to the CDC.
