The seven-day total of new confirmed COVID-19 cases in Erie County has doubled in the past two weeks, although it remains at a low level not seen since April 2020.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 26 new cases in the county from July 16 to 22, an increase from 19 cases the previous week and 13 cases two weeks ago.
The county rise comes as the delta variant sweeps across the country, causing the number of cases to rise and, in some areas with low COVID-19 vaccinations, filling hospitals with patients.

Hospitals in Erie County are not seeing a significant increase in the number of COVID-19 patients. The average number of daily COVID-specific hospitalizations in the county fell this week from 3 to 3.4, but has remained relatively stable since declining in the spring.
In addition, only two of the county’s 477 deaths from complications from COVID-19 have been reported in the past five weeks.
“No increase in hospitalizations. So far, everything is fine,” said Jim Donnelly, RN, nursing and quality manager at UPMC Hamot. “When you look at the number of hospitalizations reported in healthcare facilities nationwide, almost all patients are not vaccinated. We urge unvaccinated people to get vaccinated. “

A total of 134,412 county residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, the state health department reported on Friday. It represents 49.8% of all county residents and 56.2% of those eligible to receive the vaccine.
The Erie County Department of Health is running a mobile vaccination clinic Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. at the Lake City Fire Department, 10157 W. Lake Road.
Vaccinations are free for the inhabitants of the department. No insurance is necessary and no appointment is necessary.
Here’s a look at the rest of the county’s state health department’s weekly COVID-19 measurements, comparing July 9-15 to July 16-22:
- The incidence rate per 100,000 inhabitants fell from 7 to 9.6.
- The COVID-19 test positivity rate fell from 1.7% to 2.7%.
- The average daily number of COVID-19 patients on ventilators fell from zero to 0.1.
- The percentage of emergency room visits due to symptoms of COVID-19 fell from 0.9% to 1.1%.
