Islamabad: Pakistan has put its trust in nature-based solutions to tangibly reduce its CO2 emissions, says Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam.
Pakistan remains at the forefront of climate change, and yet our government, led by Prime Minister Imran Khan, is committed to climate action on the ground. We have put our trust in nature-based solutions and clean energy and believe in being part of the solution to climate change instead of adding to the global problem, “he told a round table convened by the Pakistan Environmental Trust, British High Commission and Pakistan Textile Council here.
The event was held for the country’s leading private companies to show their climate control net zero greenhouse gas emissions at the company level.
A total of 10 companies across the textile and FMCG sectors (consumer packaged goods) were the first to commit to the cause of CO2 neutrality in 2050.
Appreciating the Pakistan Environmental Trust for convening ‘trail blazers’ for climate action, the prime minister’s aide said he was hopeful that the net-zero bottom-up climate initiative led by the private sector was unique and would have a major impact.
British High Commissioner for Pakistan Christian Turner’s sad companies were the key to tackling climate change.
“As we prepare for the UN Climate Change Conference in 2021 (COP26), all companies can benefit from lowering their CO2 emissions and becoming part of Pakistan’s leadership on climate change,” he said.
A spokesman for the Pakistan Environmental Trust and former state bank of Pakistan’s governor, Dr Shamshad, said that with the worsening climate change in the country, climate change had become every business every citizen, city and business.
“It is encouraging to see our leading Pakistani companies respond to this urgent crisis. Coalitions are crucial in joining hands to make the transition to zero emissions easier, and this collective adoption of zero emissions will increase the company’s competitiveness by bringing the cost of input. down while bringing more foreign buyers to Pakistan, she said.
The commitment to net zero emissions from the coalition, Net Zero Pakistan, was confirmed by the participants, who also discussed the initiative’s roadmap.
Representatives of Artistic Milliners, Crescent Bahuman, Gul Ahmed, Interloop, Liberty Mills, Mahmood Group, Sapphire Finishing Mills, Soorty Enterprises, Tetra Pak and US Apparel & Textiles also joined the global Race to Zero campaign fought by British High Commission in the role of the United Kingdom as COP26 President.
Representatives of Net Zero Pakistan said they are part of a national collaboration between pioneering companies, public institutions and sectoral experts to deliver the zero-carbon emissions target for Pakistan by 2050 and will present the roadmap and framework for Pakistani private sector to accelerate its sustainability transition and deliver the net zero target.
According to them, climate change poses a significant challenge to human well-being, and the scientific community has identified the role that anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions play in accelerating this phenomenon. In this light, Pakistani companies are not isolated from this and can only remain globally competitive by leading the country’s net zero crossing.
