Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
Greenpeace Indonesia mentions the carbon offset scheme in Presidential Decree no. 98 for the economic value of coal in 2021, signed Joko Widodo some time ago could not prevent the current climate crisis.
GreenIea’s promoter of Indonesia’s forest campaign, M. Iqbal Damanik, said companies could actually use carbon offsets as a basis for deforestation or land permits. One aspect of climate change is triggering.
“Carbon offsets are not the answer to the current climate crisis. Carbon emissions are just a mechanism by which polluters legalize their pollution using existing forests,” Damanik said in a zoom binary on Tuesday (Sept. 11).
Carbon compensation itself is an exchange of emissions. For example, emissions produced in one location can be exchanged for emission reductions elsewhere. This system is one of the permitted alternatives to carbon trading (carbon trading).
Reflecting on other countries, Iqbal said this system could still be “cheated”. Countries or companies, Iqbal said, can buy emission quotas from other countries or companies that are still low to transfer there.
Iqbal estimates that with this “trick” they can still be said to have met their emissions reduction target.
“If we look at the Indonesian context, then carbon offsets or this carbon mechanism give companies polluter rights,” he said.
“It’s like you often cut down trees in Sumatra, but you also plant trees in Jakarta. Yes, it’s the same as lying,” he added.
It is known that President Joko Widodo signed Presidential Decree no. 98 of 2021 on the economic value of coal some time ago. The presidential decree also regulates the coal market, ie the coal trade.
The Presidential Decree explains that there are a number of regulated carbon trading mechanisms. Firstly, trade between the two business players through a cap and trade system, offsetting emissions with a carbon offset system and performance-based payments. Second, carbon taxes as well as a combination of existing systems.
Laksmi Dewanthi, Director General of Climate Change Management at the Ministry of the Environment and Forestry, said carbon pricing could be an incentive to achieve a nationally determined contribution (NDC) to climate change management.
“Coal pricing is expected to support other instruments that are also being introduced, such as forest fire management, preventing deforestation and forest degradation, or transferring technology to implement new and renewable energy,” he said in a written statement on Wednesday (March 11). .
