Police and passers-by released an infant stuck under a car in Yonkers, New York on Friday after a drunk driver drove through a storefront and cornered the infant.

A video posted by Yonkers police shows the horrific incident, in which the driver crashed into a parked car, then hit a woman carrying her child and drove straight to a barbershop with the woman on the hood.

Bystanders and police officers work to rescue a mother and her baby trapped under a car in Yonkers, New York, on July 23, 2021.

Two police officers were nearby and rushed to the scene, where they, along with passersby, raised and pushed the car to free the child trapped under the car. Body camera footage of the accident shows a chaotic scene, with the car in the middle of the barbershop, broken glass everywhere and people trying to help the baby and mother.

Police said Sunday that the mother and her baby were still in hospital but that they were “in good health”. The eight-month-old had a skull fracture and the mother, 36, had a broken leg. Their names have not been published.

The driver, David Buncorac, of Yonkers, 43, has been arrested for drunk driving and is also facing a second-degree car assault charge. Authorities said he did not have a license. Buncorac was held until noon on Sunday.

Police said they found an alcoholic drink in the suspect’s car. Also with him was a woman in the car who was unhurt.
