BOSTON – About 15 minutes after they were six teams away from batting by four rounds on Sunday afternoon, the Yankees were losing.
The blame was the eighth inning of Hell, with manager Aaron Boone guessing at least one of his decisions that led to the 5-4 crushing loss to the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
After Boone called Zac Britton to spare Jonathan Loisiga, who was roughed up as he presented for the second day in a row after a 14-day hiatus, the Red Sox had tied for third and finished second without a win. Facing hitter Kevin Blawicki, the Yankees played in the corners and returned to the middle.
Naturally, Plawecki hit a soft scorer to Shortstop, as Gleyber Torres had no chance of getting the feud at home and instead was knocked out at the start as the Red Sox tied the game 4-4.
Aaron Boone talks to Domingo German during the Yankees’ loss to the Red Sox on Sunday
“This is where I’m thinking of going there effortlessly,” Boone said. “I just don’t want to be beaten on something soft without ends, so it was the middle quarterback. In hindsight, this is the thing I kind of ask myself: Should we have sold without running out? That’s definitely debatable.”
Xander Bogaerts came next and hit the sacrifice fly to put the Red Sox ahead.
Luisiga, who has been mostly strong all season in high-powered positions, but threw 18 pitches on Saturday in his first appearance since losing time with COVID-19, was not on Sunday. After his unbeaten German Domingo lost in the eighth inning, he lost four hits – three of which were badly damaged – to the four hits he faced before he was pulled.
“Not tired at all,” Loisiga said. “I couldn’t locate my slider for strikes. Hence the diver wouldn’t move because he was moving.”
Boone said sacking Loaisiga at that place gave him “a bit of a hiatus” due to his recent schedule, but kept him in one position after the three he was bound to face. With left-footed Breton warming up in the arena, Boone stuck with Loaisiga to counter right kicker Kiké Hernandez. It backfired as Hernandez hit the RBI twice into the right field to make it 4-3.
“I felt like I wanted another right-hander,” Boone said. “If Brett was going to prepare, knowing that they would face a difficult situation [with Plawecki]. But I felt like if I could locate the stadium there, I’d love the match. But it’s a fair question.”
