Millard County, Utah – Interstate 15 is closed in both directions after a fatal accident in Millard County.

The Utah Highway Patrol said the strong winds created a dust storm, resulting in poor visibility and a “chain of accidents” with about 20 vehicles involved – including semi-trailers. The accident occurred between 4:30-5 pm between Kanoosh and Mido.

In its latest update, the UHP said at least seven people have died, and there may be more. Several others were taken to hospitals in critical condition.

The highway was closed in both directions. Northbound has since partially reopened, but significant delays can still be expected. Southbound remains closed from 7:30pm

Video from I-15 this afternoon, near where the over 20 vehicle build-up occurred in Millard County, shows how difficult it was to see during the dust storm that passed through the area.

The Utah Department of Transportation initially estimated the shutdown would last about three hours after the crash, but later updated that to five hours.

UHP Major Beau Mason advised southbound drivers to exit at Scipio and detour on US Interstate 50 toward Richfield, and northbound drivers to take I-70.

The names of the victims were not disclosed. Soldiers say they will do so at least 24 hours after notifying their closest relatives.

“We are stunned and saddened by the horrific incidents in Millard County,” Governor Spencer Cox wrote on Twitter Sunday night. “We fervently pray for the loved ones of those who have died and for those who are fighting for their lives.”
