Magnitude 5.9 earthquake strikes near Louk, Kappatin Bangai, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia
5.9 Earthquake July 26 11:52 (GMT +8)
The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency reported that Indonesia was hit near Louk and Kabopatin Bangai in Central Sulawesi by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake just 11 minutes ago. Banggai, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, on the morning of Monday, July 26, 2021 at 11:52 a.m. local time. Shallow earthquakes are more strongly felt than deep earthquakes because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the earthquake can be reviewed within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and improve their calculations, or when other agencies release their reports. The Seismological Center (EMSC) also recorded the 5.9-magnitude earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same 5.8-magnitude earthquake, and based on initial seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the epicenter area. It shouldn’t have caused major damage, other than things falling off shelves, broken windows, etc. At Luke (up 47800) located 105 km from the epicenter, the earthquake was supposed to be felt as a slight shaking. In Poso (Area 47100) located 145 km from the epicenter, VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other important news about the earthquake becomes available. If you are in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more live updates to anyone around the world who wants to know more about this earthquake.

If you felt this earthquake (or if you were near the epicenter), please share your experience and submit a short “I felt it” report! Other users will love to hear about it, and also if you didn’t feel the earthquake despite being in the area, please report it! Your contribution is also valuable for seismology, earthquake risk analysis, and mitigation efforts. You can use your device’s location or a map to indicate where you are during the earthquake. Thanks! Data on the same earthquake was reported by different agencies
Information: The more agencies report the same earthquake and publish similar data, the more you can trust the data. It usually takes up to a few hours for earthquake parameters to be calculated with near-perfect accuracy.

aftershocks
More information
Judging by its size, the fault that was active during the earthquake ruptured almost along a surface. 63 km2 (= 24 square miles) is a first-class estimate. The rupture zone is likely to be about 14 km (9 mi) long, and aftershocks usually occur during the days and weeks following an earthquake at or near the same fault, at distances of approx. Double the length of the rupture area. The broad linear arrangement of aftershock centers often includes the main shock rupture area (see map below for verification). Aftershocks recorded, newest first (0 earthquakes so far, frequently updated): So far, no aftershocks have been recorded.
