Seven people were killed in Utah after a sandstorm caused a series of car crashes Sunday, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. local time on Interstate 15 in Millard County and involved at least 20 vehicles. Authorities said several other people were taken to local hospitals in critical condition after being traced.

The Highway Patrol said the names of the victims would not be released until 24 hours after notifications were sent to their relatives.

“We are stunned and saddened by the horrific incidents in Millard County,” Utah Governor Spencer Cox wrote on Twitter. “We fervently pray for the loved ones of those who have died and for those who are fighting for their lives.”

A sandstorm in Utah caused a string of car crashes that left at least seven people dead on Sunday.

Officials said the winds caused a sand or dust storm and severely obstructed visibility on the road leading to the accident.

“It’s so tragic, it’s so hard to see the loss of life, the families and the people affected,” Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cameron Roden told ABC News affiliate KTVX in Salt Lake City. “There are still a lot of crews here, on site, and they are still actively working on the scene. I-15 is still closed and will be at least a few more hours.”
