Caleb Dressel may be the poster boy for the US men’s swimming team, but Zach Apple was the man of the moment on Monday at the Tokyo Olympics.
Apple pinned the 4X100 freestyle relay team to win a stunning 46.69-second split. Only seven or so swimmers walked that fast in a 4×100 relay, according to observers. The world record long in the 100th Freestyle is 46.91 and this was achieved with the now-banned supersuit.
The United States posted 3:08.97, the third fastest time in history, followed by Italy (3:10.11) and Australia (3:10.22).
The top three swimmers, Dressel, Blake Peroni and Beau Baker, weren’t slouched with solid legs in the 47s range. But Apple charged the gold-medal effort with a swim that one viewer described as “utterly insane.”
As good as it was, Australian Kyle Chalmers hit 46.44 to take Australia’s bronze.
The 100m freestyle event would be a thing.

Here are some comments from swimming enthusiasts:
Honestly, the best part of the 4×100 free relay wasn’t the racing itself. Zach Apple reacted to the fact that his spill was faster than Caleb Dressel! 🤣 #TokyoOlympics #Swimming #TeamUSA

Thank you Zach Apple for providing the quickest time to put Team USA on the podium and gold medal.

Zack Apple with a split 46.6 on the anchor shank! One of only two swimmers in the final to split 47 seconds alongside Australian Kyle Chalmers at 46.44 seconds. https://t.co/FqDwc2alMS

Zach Apple with 46.69 100 split in 4×100 is absolutely insane. Like a real thing that only 7 other people did

Can I also comment on the fact that Zach Apple sounds like a name that might make up for an American Olympic athlete

The USA snatched an overall win and gold medal with an anchor storm of 46.69 by Zach Apple after good work by Caeleb Dressel (47.26), Blake Pieroni (47.58) and Bowen Becker (47.44) for a 3:08.97 revving on the men’s 4x100m freestyle in the Tokyo.

Can we give Zach Apple credit for swimming the fastest man and stop talking about Caleb Dressel, please? # Olympic Games

By my count, Zach Apple only scored the seventh under-47 game in the final of the 4×100 meter freestyle relay at the #Olympics. Three of those times, obviously, happened in Beijing with LZR Racers. #Swimming #USA Team https://t.co/xjlo9MENYi
