American Katie Ledecky shook off criticism to set an Olympic record in the 1,500 meters freestyle on Monday, just hours after losing to Australia’s Ariarn Titmus in the 400 meters freestyle.

Ledecky won her competition with a time of 15:35.35 as she made her Olympic debut in the 1500m freestyle at the Tokyo Aquatics Center. The men’s team has always raced in this event, but Tokyo marked the first time that female competitors had participated in the long-distance swimming.
