Nokia claims its new XR20 smartphone is ‘life-resistant’

Nokia parent company HMD Global announced a massive revamp of the Nokia phone earlier this year, and now the company has officially announced that the first Nokia Series X phone will arrive in the US next month.

The $550 XR20, which was launched on August 24, is the most expensive phone in Nokia’s updated portfolio. Nokia claims the XR20, which has powerful specs and better endurance than other mid-range phones, is the company’s first “life-resistant” phone.

HMD/Nokia dropped a teaser on Twitter last week hinting that the XR20 is an attempt to live up to the legendary durability offered by older Nokia phones.

The XR20 has a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus display, which is said to be four times more scratch-resistant than a typical smartphone screen, and a body that HMD says can withstand drops of up to six feet without a cover.

HMD also claims that the XR20 has been tested to operate in temperatures as low as 131 degrees Fahrenheit or as low as -4 degrees, with a water resistance capable of withstanding dives of up to five feet for an hour. In an effort to prove just how tough the XR20 can be, Nokia/HMD gave the phone to famous footballers Roberto Carlos and Lisa Zemush to kick and flip the phone across various surfaces and conditions.

The XR20 features a 6.67-inch display with a 2400 x 1080 resolution powered by a Snapdragon 480 5G chip along with 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a built-in microSD card slot. As for the cameras, you get an 8MP front camera with apertures for selfies, a 48MP main camera, and a 13MP ultra-wide camera on the back. The XR20 also gets support for some OZO spatial audio and noise cancellation technologies from Nokia.

Like all good budget and mid-range phones, the XR20 also features a USB-C port for charging and a 3.5mm jack for wired audio, as well as 15W Qi wireless charging and a 4,630mAh battery. And in what may end up being the most underappreciated of the updates, HMD says the XR20 will get a full four years of monthly security patches along with up to three years of software upgrades.

The XR20 hasn’t been as flashy or innovative as some of Nokia’s most premium phones over the past few years, but it’s nice to see Nokia/HMD trying to go back to its roots with a simple, well-designed phone that’s built to last.

The Nokia XR20 will be available in two colors (Ultra Blue and Granite Gray) when it arrives next month.
