The mayor announced that all New York City workers, including police, fire and education personnel, will be required to vaccinate by mid-September or take a weekly test.
The deadline for the mandate will be September 13, when the fall semester begins, and next week health care will become the first sector to be subject to this requirement, Bill de Blasio said at a press conference Monday.
The mayor also urged private entities to consider establishing mandates for similar vaccines in their workplaces.
De Blasio said last week that public health care workers would be required to be vaccinated or tested for Covid-19 weekly, but he did not announce anything to other employees in the city.
That left New York City shy of efforts in San Francisco, which earlier this month became one of the first major cities in the United States to mandate vaccinations for its public employees.
New York City’s new mandate will apply to employees in operations such as the police department, fire department, schools, office workers, as well as in the field.
Those who have not been vaccinated will have to take a weekly test for Covid-19, and unvaccinated individuals will need to wear a mask in indoor public spaces. “September is when the rubber hits the road,” de Blasio said.
The mayor said private entities may consider imposing vaccinations among their employees. Last week, officials in three San Francisco Bay Area counties urged employers in those areas to set up mandates for vaccines, although the request was not binding.
The historic city of Savannah, Georgia, has reauthorized its mask, due to “sharp” increases in daily Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations across the city and state of Georgia.
The reinstated mask mandate went into effect Monday in St. Louis, Missouri, one of the US hotspots for the delta variant of Covid-19.
Los Angeles County reordered the mask earlier this month, while a group representing 300 San Francisco bars introduced a “no vaccine, no entry” policy — unless recipients were able to produce a negative Covid-19 test taken within the previous 72-hour period. .
