Orange County CEO Jerry L. Demings, referred to as the county mayor, addressed the public Monday to discuss the sudden increase in coronavirus cases in the area, stressing the community’s need to come together and be safe.

“These numbers are extraordinary,” Demings said during a news conference. “We’re seeing nearly 1,000 new cases in Orange County every day. Those are the numbers we saw at the highest peak last year.” “So a thousand days is extraordinary. We are now in a crisis situation.”

Orange County, which is also home to Universal Studios Orlando resort and SeaWorld Orlando, has reported 3,893 new cases of coronavirus in the last 14 days, according to new data from the OC Health Care Agency. Demings stated that Central Florida hospitals are now nearing capacity.

The surge comes a month after local theme parks eased mask mandates for attendees. Demings explained that those who travel during the summer should be tested and allowed time to isolate.

He then urged community members to get vaccinated and continue to take precautions regarding social distancing. Florida has currently vaccinated 48.5% of its entire population, according to data from the CDC, and the county is home to 61% of all residents over the age of 12 who have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

“Not many of you can tolerate the disease,” Demings continued, noting the spread of the highly contagious delta type. New data from the CDC has revealed that the delta variant is now the most common form of the COVID-19 virus circulating in the United States.

“A lot of you don’t want to get sick. You don’t want to infect your family members, just like me. So now is the time – like any other time in our society – for you to step up and get vaccinated,” Demings continued. “We, as a society, need to work together to slow the spread.”
