Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mallorcas is working remotely because he was in contact with a department official who later tested positive for Covid-19, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told POLITICO.
“Secretary Mallorcas has a hypothetical schedule this week following his close contact with the DHS official who subsequently tested positive for COVID-19,” DHS spokeswoman Marsha Espinosa said in a statement. “The secretary is fully vaccinated, has no symptoms, and has tested negative twice. Official DHS contacts are being sought. These recommendations have been communicated by the DHS Chief Medical Officer’s Office and are taken with great caution.”
When asked how many other DHS officials have been exposed to the coronavirus and if they are also under quarantine, Espinosa said the department is adhering to CDC guidelines but did not provide details.
