Facebook has temporarily halted all sales of its Oculus Quest 2 headphones due to concerns that the foam used between the headset and your face could in some cases cause “extreme skin irritation”.
Facebook has been realizing for a while that the foam used will do this; In a post dating back to December 2020, the company said:
We have received reports of skin irritation from approximately 0.01% of people using the Quest 2, which occurs where the foam portion of the Quest 2 headset is placed on their face. While the vast majority of cases are mild and should resolve on their own, this does not meet our high standards for customer experience.
Then in April 2021, Facebook decided there was no problem, and posted an update:
After thoroughly investigating this issue, we have not found any contamination or unexpected substances in our manufacturing process. We identified a few trace substances typically found in the manufacturing process that could contribute to skin irritation, and while these were already at levels below industry standards, out of great caution, we changed our process to reduce them further. We have confirmed with dermatologists and toxicologists that these levels are considered extremely low. While this issue has only been reported by a very small percentage of Quest 2 users, with these changes, we believe users are less likely to experience irritation from any substances in the foam face interface. We encourage any customer experiencing irritation from using the Quest 2 to contact Oculus Support for a facelift replacement.

Turns out there must be some sort of problem, because earlier today the company published another update, this one says (focus is mine):
Today, we are introducing a new silicone cover to all customers globally, including as part of the joint voluntary recall of the Quest 2 removable foam face interface with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada. Additionally, we’ve been reaching out to global regulators and taking the extra step of pausing Quest 2 sales globally while we work to include new silicone covers in all Quest 2 packages. The new silicone cover fits the Quest 2’s removable foam face front, and starting at 24 In August, all Quest 2 headphones will come with a silicone case included in each box. For more information, please visit the Oculus blog.
Starting August 24 – when sales resume – all new Quest 2 headphones will include this as standard.

For those who already own the Quest 2, you can get one of the silicone cases shipped by ordering one.
