2021 Olympics live updates – Katie Ledecky chasing gold, Kevin Durant and US men’s collars looking to bounce, plus more from Tokyo

Are you not enjoying? The Tokyo Olympics kicks off Tuesday night with redemption opportunities and, of course, more gold medals. After a busy morning that saw Simone Biles-less USA narrowly runner-up behind the Russian Olympic Committee in the women’s gymnastics team final and USA taking the silver after losing to Japan in the championship match, it’s time to turn our attention to the evening’s slate.

Fortunately for us, that includes a chance to return to NBA after losing to France and two chances for super swimming Katie Ledecky to win her first gold medal in the Games.

If you don’t mind staying up late, you’ll be able to watch Kevin Durant—who enters tonight’s game as 15-point shy away from tying Carmelo Anthony’s record to points in US Olympic team history—and his co. as they take on. Iran (12:40 a.m. ET, Wednesday). The stakes are high as the Americans may need to beat Iran and the Czech Republic if they hope to reach the quarter-finals and keep their dreams of winning a fourth consecutive gold.

From Lidecky’s pursuit of a sixth gold medal in her career (GOAT Things) to running KD into the record books, we’ve got you covered with updates from all of tonight’s action:

Many options for USA men’s basketball despite opening loss

The US team is 0-1 in pool at the Olympics after losing to France on Sunday. The format has changed from previous games, so the path to progression to the medal round is different, and it’s something Americans will now have to pay more attention to.

Unlike in the past, three groups are made up of four teams and not two groups of six, which creates some nuances in how the teams progress.

The two best teams in each group will advance to the quarter-finals. This means that, despite the defeat, the Americans still control their own destiny. If they beat Iran on Wednesday and then the Czech Republic on Saturday, they will grab no worse than second place in their group and will qualify.

However, there is a scenario in which the United States may lose another game and continue to advance. Two teams finishing third will receive team play based on the points difference between them. This means that the end result is relevant and that increasing the score if there is a chance of a successful winning can end up being valuable.

For the eight teams that have qualified for the quarter-finals, there is a re-draw to determine the medal round bracket. By placing second or third in a group, which is the scenario Team USA faces, they will likely have a harder path to gold. – Brian Windhurst

– USA Basketball (USABASKETBALL) July 27, 2021, Jordan Chiles chasing after it

Jordan Chiles was put on the spot on Tuesday when Simone Biles withdrew from the women’s team all-around gymnastics competition. While the Americans couldn’t catch the Russian Olympics for gold, Chili’s did well and showed off some killer dance moves to boot.
