Republican candidate Jake Elsie won the hotly contested special electoral run-off in Texas’ 6th congressional district, defeating fellow Republican Susan Wright.
Polling watchers called the race late Tuesday night, cementing Elsie’s surprise victory.
Trump is running in the Texas special elections in which all the Republican party participated for Congress
Wright is the widow of the late Republican Congressman Ron Wright, who died earlier this year from the coronavirus. Former President Donald Trump endorsed Wright in April, but despite not having the former president’s endorsement, Elsie raised more than $1.2 million, nearly double Wright’s money.
Some viewed the race as a referendum on Trump’s influence on the Republican Party, although turnout in the special election was low. Trump participated in the election this week where he launched automated calls in support of Wright.

“Hey, this is your all-time favorite president, Donald Trump,” Trump said in the phone calls. “I’m asking you to go out and vote for a great republic, great woman, Susan Wright.”
Matt McCoyak, the Travis County Republican Party Chairman, called the race “the first test of the strength of President Trump’s endorsement in the post-presidency period.”
