Salzman, 45, has spent the past several years in home confinement. She faced between 7 to 9 years in prison for the charges she pleaded guilty to, however, prosecutors told US District Judge Nicholas Garofis that her cooperation was “exceptional” and a large part of securing a conviction against Raniere, who was convicted of extortion, sex trafficking and other charges in In 2019 he was sentenced to 120 years in prison.

In turn, two other conspirators who pleaded guilty in the case were convicted. Seagram heiress, Claire Bronfman, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to conceal and harbor people who were not lawfully in the United States for financial gain, and to fraudulent use of identification. She was sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison.

Before her sentencing, Salzman wrote a letter to the court in which she apologized to the victims.

“I wish I could come back. I wish I could get my engagement back. I wish I was stronger and saw things sooner,” Salzman wrote to the court.

In her sentencing note, Salzman’s lawyers wrote that her mother introduced her to Raniere while she was in college and that she urged her to take six months of Nxivm’s “Executive Success Programs” classes to help her figure out what she wanted to do with her life. Salzman went from attending classes to teaching them, she wrote in her letter to the court, and within 24 months she had gone from a junior position to a senior executive position.

“I was 23, and I really thought I was helping to change the world,” she wrote.

Her mother told the court that introducing her daughter to Nxivm and Raniere was one of the most unfortunate things she had ever done.

“I am responsible for having Lauren before you, having endured arrest, prosecution, and successful cooperation, and now face her own judgment,” wrote Nancy Salzman, who has pleaded guilty to one count of racketeering conspiracy and is due to be sentenced on September 8.

For nearly two decades, Lauren Salzman delved into the set and her relationship with Raniere, which lasted for 17 years. She testified that she stayed with him because she wanted children, and repeatedly promised Ranier that they would have a child together.

“Over time, I’ve watched him take over the lives of countless others and exploit them for his own ends,” wrote Lauren Salzman.
