Yankees hit trade deadline big, buy Joey Gallo from Rangers

With the rest of the MLS loaded up, the Yankees finally made their move. The Bombers executed a long-rumored deal, acquiring Air Defense player Gallo from the Rangers. Jeff Bassan reported that he is a dealer pending medical review. The Yankees will also get left bowler John King.

Gallo, 27, brings some pop additions to a lineup that has seen its ups and downs in 2021. He made a solid .223/.379/.490 cut, which equates to a 139 OPS+. Gallo has appeared only on the right field this season, but he has experience on the left side, in both corners, and even in the middle.

This move doesn’t quite bring the Yankees anything they don’t already have to some degree (though left-handed). Gallo has tremendous raw power and is best suited for the angle. It doesn’t provide the communication skills or speed that many fans would claim.

But he definitely makes the Yankees even better. Gallo may not hold a high center midfield often, but he consistently ranks as a top-ranked defender while pressing on the right or left field. The combination of good defense and slowness has allowed him to run a total of rWAR in excess of 4.0 this year, a pace that would earn him MVP votes in the lower ballot if maintained through the end of the season.

Gallo alone may not save the Yankees season. It moves the ball in the right direction. The Yankees have an improved squad, now and in 2022, as Gallo will serve through his final year of refereeing next season. This team will not sell, and will continue to press for Championship number 28.

Update (8:45 p.m. EDT): Athletic player Lindsey Adler has reported that at least five potential players will lead the Rangers’ way: field backs Trevor Hoover and Ezequiel Duran, defensive back Iverson Pereira, and bowlers Glenn Otto and Randy Vasquez. That’s a pretty deep distance for Texas, but one that doesn’t include any of the Yankees’ main expectations.
