California Governor Gavin Newsom received the support of Senator Elizabeth Warren in a fiery ad published Wednesday, in which the progressive president accused “Trump Republicans” of a “power grab” in the Golden State.
The Democratic candidate from Massachusetts linked the impeachment election to alleged Republican attacks on the “right to vote” as well as to challenge the election results.

“We’ve seen Trump Republicans all over the country attacking the election results and the right to vote,” Warren said in the 30-second clip. “Abuse of the recall process has cost taxpayers millions.”
The announcement hit the California airwaves just weeks before voters are expected to receive mail-in ballots in the September 14 election.
Newsom faces more than 40 contenders vying to have him removed from office after his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
Big names like Olympic gold medalist Caitlin Jenner, former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and radio host Larry Elder are just a few of the more than 20 Republican candidates competing against Newsom.
Eight other Democrats, one Libertarian, nine Independents and two Green Party members also reached the official ballot.
Warren has already thrown her weight behind Newsom in her social media impeachment condemnation. But her announcement on Wednesday highlights the national interest that top Democrats are paying to the governor’s race.
Although more than 46% of California voters are registered as Democrats — nearly twice the number of registered Republican voters — Newsom still faces a tough election.
California governor blames conservative media for ‘this grim summons’ election against him
A poll conducted by the University of California, Berkeley’s Institute for Governmental Studies showed that 47% of California voters support Newsom’s removal from office, while 50% say they oppose the move.
The poll suggests what could be a closer race than Democrats originally thought possible in the deep blue state.
The Newsom campaign appears to have noticed the narrow ballot and reached out to supporters in an email on Wednesday, calling for a massive voter turnout.
“Let’s be very direct and honest: If we don’t have the resources we need to get our constituents out, we could miss that summons,” read the email, first reported by Politico.
Warren addressed the vote in her ad and made it clear that Californians would receive a mail-in ballot asking them to vote for or against Newsom’s election.
“Vote ‘No’ to protect California and our democracy,” Warren told ad viewers. “Stop withdrawing Republicans.”

Voters will be asked two questions on their September ballot. The first, whether or not Newsom should be recalled, and the second, who should replace him.
If the majority votes not to impeach Newsom, he will remain in office.
