The Cleveland Cavaliers offseason have been so busy with the upcoming NBA draft along with so many trade discussions that Koby Altman has been on his phone for about 24 hours a day. But amid all these precursors to change, one thing has remained constant on Caves’ side – the case of Darius Garland and Isaac Okoro.
According to Sam Amiko of Hoops Wire, the fifth overall selections in the last two NBA drafts have been taken off the table by the Cavs.
After a disappointing rookie year, Garland made the most of his full season to raise his game. It resulted in a campaign so promising for the sophomore, that it made the idea of a breakup with Colin Sexton more palatable.
The 6-foot-1 guard from Vanderbilt produced 17.4 points, 6.1 assists and 1.2 steals per game on a 45-39-84 in the shooting split. Garland’s jump didn’t go unnoticed, as he garnered enough votes to put him in a tie for 10th in the MVP race.
On the other hand, Okoro was thrown into the fire right off the bat by the Cavs. He was tasked with guarding the best player in the opposing team’s vicinity every night. Nicknamed “Ace” by his teammates for his stoic demeanor, he steadily improved on his way to 16.6 points per game in May. The defensive-minded striker is named for the All-NBA Rookie Second Team.
The core of the Cavs looks promising with Garland and Okoro on board. Things will only get better once a potential cornerstone is added in the 2021 NBA Draft.
