Dr. Scott Gottlieb says the pandemic will sweep the United States at different times

Dr. Scott Gottlieb told CNBC that he expects coronavirus cases in the United States, which are linked to the highly contagious delta variant, to start declining within a few weeks.

“Most likely, in two or three weeks, I think we might be about three weeks behind the UK,” the former head of the Food and Drug Administration said in the Trump administration.

“The UK is clearly on a slope… I expect some southern states that have already been the epicenter of this pandemic to start rolling over in the next two to three weeks.”

While the pandemic is still expanding across southern states, the rate of expansion is showing signs of slowing. Gottlieb told “The News With Shepherd Smith” that the slowdown is an indication that those southern states may have reached their peak.

However, Gottlieb warned that northern states may start to see more delta spread, as rates fall in the south.

“Here, in this country, it would be more regional now, I don’t expect the intensity of delta spreading in states like New York or Michigan to be as it was in the south,” Gottlieb said. “We have more coverage for vaccines, there, we have more previous infections, but you’ll see a rise in cases, even in states where there’s a lot of vaccine coverage, maybe not as severe.”
