Netflix asks actors to vaccinate Zone A crew

Netflix will require actors and those who come close to them to be vaccinated against COVID-19, according to Hollywood’s new return-to-work protocols.

The mandate, which is the first broad production vaccination requirement announced by a Hollywood studio, will affect actors and “Area A” crew – those in close contact with the cast – for all US broadcast productions.

Last week, major Hollywood and studio unions agreed on new protocols that gave producers “the option to implement mandatory vaccination policies for actors and crew in Zone A on a production-by-production basis.” However, production cannot impose vaccine mandates on other workers – those in areas B, C and D.

Production workers in the Los Angeles area will need to be tested for COVID frequently, regardless of their vaccination status, and Los Angeles County is currently requiring all residents to wear masks indoors at workplaces and businesses.

Many other series currently in production require cast members to be vaccinated, but most productions take them on a show-by-show basis.

Netflix’s mandate has been announced, first reported by Deadline, as the COVID-19 Delta variant threatens to return to normality that the industry has been expecting. Although penetrations are rare and unlikely to require hospitalization, there have been numerous reports of fully vaccinated individuals contracting this type.

As production follows union mandates, other parts of the industry are adapting quickly. Many premieres and festivals require vaccinations or negative COVID tests, while some hold back in the face of a delta variant.
