The reason for this is an insufficient rate of vaccinations, and the solution may be to task people with taking action to protect themselves and their community, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a member of the FDA’s Vaccine Advisory, said Dr. Paul Offit.
“We hit a wall,” Offit told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Wednesday. “We’ve reached the point where you have to force people to do the right thing.”
Initial enthusiasm for vaccination waned and many who did not express hesitation or resistance to vaccination. Currently, 49.3% of the US population is fully vaccinated, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — a far cry from the 70 to 85% that experts have estimated would be needed to slow or halt the spread of the virus.
“There was a time when we were giving out three million doses a day,” Offit said. “If we stay on that path, we could be at 80% immune in the population.”
Case numbers are rising again. There are 49 states seeing an increase in cases, and 35 states seeing a seven-day average of at least 50% new cases compared to last week, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
Wednesday’s Washington Nationals MLB game against the Philadelphia Phillies was postponed after 12 Nationals members — four players and eight employees — tested positive for Covid-19.
Rising case numbers have prompted some districts to turn back to hide mandates.
Atlanta’s mayor issued an executive order Wednesday requiring masks in all indoor public spaces, state employees and visitors in Kansas will be required to wear masks indoors starting Monday and the Pentagon has implemented a mandate to use indoor masks regardless of vaccination status.
But other local leaders are resisting a return to pre-vaccine precautions.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp tweeted Wednesday that he will not issue any mandates for masks or lockdowns in the state.
Georgia is one of 35 states where new cases this week are up more than 50% from last week. Currently, 38.5% of the entire state’s population is vaccinated, according to the CDC.
“The biggest obstacle to getting more people vaccinated and getting the country back to normal is the mixed messages from Washington, D.C. and those with partisan agendas. In Georgia, we’ve been consistent,” Kemp said in his tweets.
Health experts said changes to recommendations, such as those made to hide guidance, are caused by lack of vaccination and altered deltas in the landscape of the pandemic.
Experts defend vaccine mandates as frequency mounts
Despite education efforts, increased access and financial incentives in many places, vaccination rates have slowed dramatically – a worrying trend for health experts who say vaccination is the best hope for ending the pandemic.
Vaccine frequency overall has declined over the past two months, but some Republicans are more likely to reject a Covid-19 vaccine now than they were in March, according to survey data released Wednesday by the Public Debt Research Institute and Interfaith Youth Core.
The poll found that about 46% of Republicans who trust far-right news said they would refuse vaccination, up from 31% who said the same thing in March. However, 77% of Republicans who trust the most mainstream media and 64% of Republicans who trust Fox News are “vaccine receptive,” according to survey data.
One motive that may help overcome hesitation, some officials and experts have suggested, is vaccine mandates. Many places have started to implement it.
The New York state court system announced Wednesday that all employees will have to take regular Covid-19 testing if they have not already been vaccinated, according to the statement. The Durst Organization, one of New York City’s largest real estate developers, said employees who did not receive a vaccination after Labor Day would be fired.
Baylor Scott & White Health Texas health care system announced Wednesday that all of its more than 49,000 employees, volunteers, vendors and students will be required to be vaccinated against Covid-19 by October.
“Delta type is the most contagious and dangerous strain we’ve seen to date, dramatically increasing rates of severe disease and hospitalization. The vast majority of these cases are among the unvaccinated,” the company said in a statement.
At Maui Memorial Medical Center, visitors now have to vaccinate against Covid-19 due to the sudden rise on the island, hospital CEO Michael Rempes told CNN affiliate Hawaii News Now.
Surgeon General says after Pfizer news that vaccinated people do not yet need a booster dose
Pfizer released new data Wednesday suggesting that a third dose of its vaccine could “powerfully” enhance protection against the delta variant — beyond the protection offered by the two standard doses.
The data, which included 23 people, has not yet been reviewed or published.
But US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy told CNN on Wednesday that people who have been fully vaccinated do not need to get a booster dose at this point, if any. He said any decision on whether that changes would be made by agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the US Food and Drug Administration.
“This data is from Pfizer, we’ve been in conversations with them about what they see in terms of their studies of reinforcers,” Murthy told CNN’s “Newsroom” when asked about the release of the data. “But at this point, I want to be very clear: People don’t need to go out and get a booster shot.”
Murthy also said that whether it was ethical to recommend a third dose while there is a significant shortage of vaccine supply in the developing world was a “crucial question.” He said the ability to reduce the likelihood of developing future variants depends on limiting worldwide spread.
A research and development leader said during the company’s earnings call on Wednesday that Pfizer expects to submit data on a third dose of its coronavirus vaccine to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as soon as next month.
