Governor Kate Brown is considering whether to require state employees to vaccinate

Governor Kate Brown is considering whether to follow in California’s lead and mandate to vaccinate state employees, as Oregon faces another wave of COVID-19 due to a more contagious delta variant.

Oregon’s vaccination rate has stagnated since most of the eligible people who were eager to get vaccinated did so earlier this year.

“We are examining actions California has taken, including those related to public servants, and identifying additional actions that may be taken in Oregon,” Governor Charles Boyle’s deputy director of communications wrote in an email Tuesday.

The state is already paying a $100 stimulus to employees who get vaccinated by the end of July. According to University of Oregon researchers, nearly 80% of public sector workers in the state are vaccinated against COVID.

State health officials on Tuesday recommended all Oregonians wear masks indoors, as the number of new daily cases rose to 1,000 and the number of people hospitalized with the virus rose 25% in a single day. But they stopped short of restoring the mandate of the inner mask.

On Monday, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that he will require all state employees and public and private health care workers on-site to be vaccinated or face at least weekly testing starting August 9. That will take effect in mid-September and President Biden is expected to announce Thursday that all civilian federal employees must be vaccinated or undergo routine coronavirus testing. Federal employees who treat patients in hospitals operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs will have to get shots.

Those ads did not move Portland officials, who said Monday they would not follow California and New York out of respect for the variety of reasons city employees might be reluctant to get vaccinated, from online misinformation to distrust of the medical system. However, Mayor Ted Wheeler said Wednesday that he will push to require municipal workers to provide proof of vaccination or to undergo weekly COVID tests.
