Danny Meyer: If you want to be unvaccinated, you can eat somewhere else

“If you really want to not get vaccinated, you can have dinner somewhere else, and you can also go to work somewhere else,” Mayer told CNN’s Bobby Harlow Thursday. “I would call this a corporate policy, not a mandate,” he added.

The policy will take effect on September 7. “We require all guests to show proof that they have been fully vaccinated,” a pop-up notice on the website said, adding: “Our teams must also be fully vaccinated.”

Guests will be required to bring “your physical Covid-19 vaccine card, New York State Excelsior card, relevant state-provided vaccine card, or a copy of your vaccination card to share upon arrival,” according to the hospitality group’s website.

The pandemic has devastated restaurants across the United States, and forced thousands to close as the economy shut down last year. When vaccinations became available in the spring, dining out started making a comeback, but the Delta variant throws a wrench in customers’ plans to eat out again. The Mayer Group joins a growing list of companies implementing vaccine requirements and mandates as the more virulent delta variant continues to spread across the United States.

The owner of the restaurant has always been a pioneer in this field. In 2015, he instituted a no-tip policy in 18 of the company’s restaurants and raised hourly wages for workers. This policy was reversed during the pandemic as the group’s restaurants began to open again and the company aimed to provide its employees with more economic assistance. Mayer banned smoking in his restaurants in 2003.

Union Square Hospitality Group operates restaurants and events in New York, Washington, D.C., and other cities across the United States. The group’s portfolio includes the famous Union Square Café, which Mayer opened in New York in 1985.

Shake Shack, the fast-paced burger chain that was founded in 2004, has not yet established a vaccination policy. “Shake Shack will make the appropriate decision that it will make at the right time,” he said.
