House Liberty Bloc wants Cheney, Kinzinger expelled from the Republican convention

The conservative House of Representatives Freedom Caucus has called for Representatives Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois to be removed from the Republican caucus, in an effort to punish the two for joining the committee investigating the January 6 attack on the US Capitol.

Cheney and Kinzinger were added to the committee by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in an effort to secure some Republican votes.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy initially named five additional Republicans to join the committee, but when Pelosi rejected two of them due to their earlier remarks, McCarthy withdrew all of his picks, leaving only Cheney and Kinzinger.

“It was a contradiction to have you sitting in your convention, individuals who have announced that they want to fire the minority leader,” Andy Biggs, chair of the House of Representatives Freedom Caucus, said during a Thursday news conference.

In Congress, the caucus or caucus serves as the official arm of the party and organizes legislators’ committees, leadership, and other important roles.

Bigs wants to establish a new rule for the Republican convention that any member who accepts a committee appointment outside the normal procedure “will cease to be a member of the convention immediately.”

The Jan. 6 commission held its first hearing on Tuesday, hosting a panel of four police officers who gave details in emotional accounts of their attempts to defend the building against a crowd of then-President Donald Trump supporters.

Cheney was earlier ousted as the chair of the House Republican convention after she criticized Trump and his fellow Republicans for continuing to advance false allegations of fraud in the 2020 election.
