(Kentucky Governor’s Office)
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has recommended that all school districts in the state require K-12 students and staff to wear face masks this fall.
“For schools, you teach science in your classroom, you have to take it into account when making decisions,” Bashir said in a briefing Thursday.
Bashir urged every principal and school board to “do the right thing, just make the right decision” to require face masks inside schools.
“We have to keep fighting this battle until it’s over,” Bashir said.
Some context: Beshear said the state is seeing “a huge number of cases in summer camps” where, unlike schools, “you don’t see … unvaccinated children, without masks, in a poorly ventilated room, for hours at a time.”
Bashir also stressed the dangerous spread of the delta variant of Covid-19.
“It will spread through unvaccinated workplaces and classrooms, leading to lost productivity, as parents and caregivers cannot go to work due to prolonged quarantine,” the governor said. “I’m not currently thinking about re-delegating the mask, we’ll watch what happens and again, it’s on the table, if needed.”
The governor emphasized that all state employees are still required to wear face masks at work.
