It’s been a long time since the Detroit Pistons have been a factor in the Eastern Conference.

They’re hoping Cade Cunningham is the one to finally get them back there after making the Oklahoma State star the best overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft Thursday night.

“It’s still crazy to be in the moment,” Cunningham, who wore an all-black suit and shirt and tie, said in an interview with ESPN’s Malika Andrews after the selection was made. “Words can’t really explain the feelings… Everyone is so happy, my family is all here, to be able to celebrate this moment with them, it’s a blessing.

“I love it. Detroit I’m all the way. Detroit Pistons, I’m all the way. Let’s do it.”

As expected, the Houston Rockets and Cleveland Cavaliers with Galen Green and Evan Mobley won picks No. 2 and 3, respectively. The Toronto Raptors chose Scotty Barnes for fourth, with former Gonzaga star Jalen Suggs relegating to the Orlando Magic in fifth.

But it all started with Cunningham.

The 6-foot-8 guard from Dallas will be required to try to get the Pistons back into the Eastern Conference playoff mix. Detroit has made postseason three times in the past 12 seasons, but has not won a single playoff game since reaching the Eastern Conference Finals for the sixth consecutive time in 2008.

The Pistons hope that will finally change after some luck in the NBA lottery last month gave them the best overall pick for the first time since 1970. That year, future Detroit Hall of Fame inductees were drafted by St. Bonaventure Center Bob Lanier.

The Pistons would be happy to get anywhere near the same score this time, as Cunningham advances to a roster of outstanding players from last year’s draft in striker Sadiq Bey and quarterback Isaiah Stewart, as well as free agent signed last year Jeramy Grant, who currently plays for the USA at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The Rockets followed Detroit by taking on the player they’ve been closely associated with for weeks: Green, the explosive shooter who made history last year by being part of the inaugural G League Ignite team.

Green averaged 17.9 points and shot 36.5% of Ignite’s 3-point range during the G League bubble at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, showing the kind of ability that made him a five-star recruit.

Green will now be the focus of Houston’s rebuilding efforts following the trade of franchise icon James Harden last season, where he will play alongside big man Christian Wood with the Rockets under coach Stephen Silas.

That left the Cavaliers an easy third-place option against Mobley, the USC big man.

Mobley has not only been a good fit for the Cavs — who has taken periphery players Collin Sexton (No. 8), Darius Garland and Isaac Okoro (both No. 5)) in the lottery in each of the last three NBA drafts — but he’s also been the consensus choice as the best The remaining talent is on the board.

Mobley was dominant at USC in his only season on campus, winning the Pac-12 awards – Conference Player of the Year, Player of the Year, and Defensive Player – after averaging 16.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.9 . Blocks in 33 games for Trojans.

Teams tried to trade up to No. 3, but the Cavaliers kept the check and now hope to start Mobley at the heart of the Cavaliers after three ugly years in the wake of LeBron James’ departure to Los Angeles in 2018.

Some believe the draft actually started at number four, as in the days before that, there was speculation that the Raptors might not take Suggs, who entered the recruiting season as a top-four pick after starring as a freshman in Gonzaga. In the end, the hype was subtle, as the Raptors went on to break into the 6-foot-9 Barnes, the latest tall, athletic and versatile striker to fall out of head coach Leonard Hamilton’s Florida State program in recent years.

Like last year’s top-five pick from FSU, Patrick Williams – who went to the Chicago Bulls in fourth – Barnes will have to improve his shot after making just 27.5% of his attempts from beyond the 3-point arc in his one season with the Seminoles.

But the 6-foot-9 striker is capable of a lot of other things right now, and he could step in alongside Fred Vanfleet, Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby with the Raptors.

That left Suggs abruptly dropping into The Magic with the fifth overall pick.

Suggs helped lead the Bulldogs into the national championship game—his triple pointers beat UCLA in the Final Four—before losing to Baylor in the title game to fall short of becoming the first team since Indiana in 1976 to go unbeaten in an NCAA season.

Suggs—who starred in football as a quarterback and basketball as a base guard in Minnesota high school—remains more than impressed with his two-way ability, making him a top five pick.

Orlando took the opportunity to add a general to his roster, with the Magic hopeful that Suggs can develop the same relationship with new coach Jamal Mosley that he did with Luka Doncic in the past few years as an assistant at Dallas.

With the sixth pick, the Oklahoma City Thunder – a team with more first rounds than could be counted for the next several years – took over Australian goalkeeper Josh Gedi.

Fifth Australian to be drafted in the lottery – and the first since Ben Simmons first went overall five years ago – Jedi had a triple-double in the A-League last year, averaging 10.9 points, 7.3 rebounds and 7.9 assists. He gives Thunder another tall and slender ball player to play alongside Shay Gilgus Alexander. Gedi played against Nigeria for the Australian national team earlier this month in Las Vegas, scoring 14 points to go with four rebounds and three assists in that game with plenty of NBA scouts in attendance.

Then, the Golden State Warriors found themselves against the clock in their first lottery pick in seventh, in which they used to take the second G League Ignite player to enter the lottery, striker Jonathan Kuminga.

After a big start to playing in the G League bubble in Orlando, Kuminga was seen as a potential candidate for the best overall pick. But emotions cooled down on him as things went on, making him an option for Golden State in the middle of the lottery. However, Kuminga – a top athletic striker, averaging 15.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game for Ignite – is a raw talent, but has quick feet who can protect multiple positions and could be a good fit alongside Golden State’s big team. 3 by Stephen Curry, Clay Thompson and Draymond Green.

While Cunningham’s selection has officially begun the draft, the procedure began very early on Thursday, with several deals completed in the hours leading up to the league’s annual selection bid.

However, one dwarfed the rest: former MVP Russell Westbrook is moving from the Washington Wizards to his hometown Los Angeles Lakers for a package that includes striker Kyle Kuzma, goalkeeper Kentavius Caldwell Pope, quarterback Montreal Harrell and number 22 overall on Thursday night. NBA Draft, ESPN sources told Adrian Wojnarowski, paired Westbrook with James and Anthony Davis.

Meanwhile, Detroit shipped Mason Plumlee Center to the Charlotte Hornets, along with the 37th overall pick, for the 57th pick. On the other hand, the Philadelphia 76ers paid cash to get the 53rd pick from the New Orleans Pelicans, while the Brooklyn Nets sent the Ranger Landry Chammett to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for the 29th pick in Thursday’s draft and goalkeeper Jevon Carter.

The Cavaliers acquired veteran goalkeeper Ricky Rubio of the Minnesota Timberwolves for striker Turian Prince, a 2022 second-round pick and monetary considerations.
