It’s a tough competition, but few people on earth seem to hate Jared Leto’s face more than Jared Leto. What else can we do from the Suicide Squad star’s continued effort to fully accentuate his features, and the pursuit of the synthetic facial scrap that has now extended to the just-released first poster of Ridley Scott’s new movie House Of Gucci? Dude looks like he was bitten by a radioactive Jeffrey Tambor.

Kudos to Scott’s film marketing team, at least, who understandably decided to stick a photo of Leto in the middle of the composite shot we saw for all five leads, lest the unbalanced arrangement send the entire photo set overboard. Because while they aren’t Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jeremy Irons, and Al Pacino—Patrizia Reggiani, Maurizio Gucci, Rodolfo Gucci, and Aldo Gucci, respectively—they don’t look weird here, they just can match Leto’s Paolo Gucci scene, Who looks like a high school student who started applying aging makeup and somehow forgot to stop. Half of what we would expect him to mutter “I’ve got a lot of shit on me” and mutter about how he doesn’t want to be around anymore.

Scott’s latest book tells the story of the murder of Maurizio Gucci, who (spoilers) was murdered by his ex-wife Patrizia in 1995. Credit: These posters have gone a long way in selling the grotesque and eerie tone that Scott used. Hopefully this story is about the fashion war within the family. (Given that the director is working through a screenplay adapted from a book subtitled A Thrilling Tale of Murder, Madness, Magic, and Greed, we’re guessing we’re not on a rough or sober ride.) House Of Gucci releases November 24, 2021; In the meantime, the inevitable trailer immediately jumped to the top of the “Gotta get a load of this” list when it finally arrived.

Update, 7:54 p.m.: Well, talk about the puffy-faced devil: The happy trailer has arrived now, hitting our senses with a blondie lick and lots of fancy jackets. As one might expect, Leto’s face is as distracting during movement as it is in still photos. But Gaga and Driver both look really charming—and not in a “Dear God, why” kind of way—which suggests that Scott’s movie might be flashy enough to make all these big makeup tricks work.
